Fantasy Baseball Morning Update: Surgery looms for Crawford
This Melky Cabrera story is hilarious. The next time I need to take a day off from blogging, I'm going to create a fake website with a fake news story about how the entire state of North Carolina had no Internet access. My editors will buy that, right?

Ross Detwiler was good enough on Friday, Bartolo Colon was terrific on Saturday, and Clayton Richard shut down the Giants on Sunday. Thanks to that strong weekend, the streaming starter record stands at 77-50 on the season. Today's pick is the struggling Edinson Volquez (owned in 12.2 percent of FOXSports.com leagues), while Tuesday's selection is Milwaukee's Marco Estrada (1.4 percent owned) against the terrible Cubs. Volquez has struggled lately, but he's pitching at PETCO, and he thinks he's made a helpful mechanical adjustment. Also, he's going against the Pirates, who might be exhausted after Sunday's 19-inning marathon.
On to the news:
- The Red Sox will decide today on how to proceed with OF Carl Crawford's elbow, but the Boston Globe reports that "surgery seems inevitable." If it happens, Crawford will aim toward an Opening Day 2013 return. This is too bad, since Crawford had been producing for fantasy owners over the past month. Daniel Nava is due back from the DL soon, and would be the obvious replacement for Crawford.
- Blue Jays 3B Brett Lawrie is working toward a Tuesday return from the DL. Lawrie's teammate, Jose Bautista, could be back as soon as this weekend.
- Pirates OF Starling Marte is on the DL with an oblique strain. Jose Tabata was recalled Sunday to take Marte's roster spot, and batted leadoff against the Cardinals. Tabata tried to steal twice, and I guess there was no shame in getting caught both times by Yadier Molina. Think about Tabata in NL-only leagues.
- Speaking of the Cardinals. did you notice that Jaime Garcia tossed eight shutout innings with 10 strikeouts in his first start since June 5? Garcia is available in 47.9 percent of FOXSports.com leagues.
- After allowing two runs in four-and-two-thirds innings in yesterday's rehab start, Brandon Morrow is expected to return to the Blue Jays on Friday or Saturday.
- In Yankeeland, 1B Mark Teixeira (wrist) plans to play tonight after a three-game absence, while CC Sabathia (elbow) is still targeting a Friday return.
- I don't want to tease you any more about David Ortiz, but he thinks he'll be back in the lineup sometime this week.
- White Sox OF Alejandro De Aza has missed two straight games with a stiff back, and said Sunday that he doesn't know when he'll play again.
- Twins OF Denard Span (neck) has been day-to-day for a week, and his return is still TBD.
- Finally! With Chris Getz done for the season due to a broken thumb, Johnny Giavotella is the Royals' everyday second baseman. Giavotella batted .323 with 10 homers and seven stolen bases at Triple A this season, and can be targeted in deep mixed leagues.
- With Michael Cuddyer (oblique) back on the DL, Tyler Colvin will be the Rockies' everyday first baseman for the foreseeable future.
- Been waiting for Joey Votto? Keep waiting.
- If you're making any pickups for the week ahead, make sure to check out this week's edition of Free Agent Frenzy first.
See you back here tomorrow morning.
