The Angels lineup may induce nightmares for the opposition, but the Halos’ starting pitching has been anything but frightening in the early going, surrendering a 4.54 ERA in just 33 2/3 innings, the fourth-lowest workload amongst rotations. Normally such figures would not be major cause for concern, as the team’s played in just six games. However, given the merits of the staff were under scrutiny in the offseason, the trepidation is understandably justified. Unfortunately for Mike Scioscia, this problem will only be amplified in the upcoming weeks, as Jered Weaver is heading to the disabled list with a broken elbow on his non-throwing arm.
The three-time All-Star, who led the American League in wins and WHIP in 2012, is expected to miss 4-6 weeks with the injury. Journeyman Jerome Williams and young gun Garrett Richards are envisioned to vie for the opening spot in Weaver’s absence. Though Williams probably has the inside track to the gig, Richards is the more intriguing options for fantasy owners thanks to his punch-out appetite.
In terms of waiver-wire options, Cleveland’s Justin Masterson is off to a hot start and available in nearly 66 percent of FOXSports.com Fantasy Baseball leagues. In deeper leagues, Brandon McCarthy (owned in 16.7 percent of leagues) and Julio Teheran (24.2 percent) possess high upside, while AL-only formats may want to take a look at Rick Porcello (7.1 percent) or Bud Norris (4.6 percent).
