Breaking Fantasy Baseball Buzz: Chris Sale new White Sox Closer
This past winter, some fantasy experts believed Chris Sale was the favorite to close for the White Sox. Hector Santiago won the gig and Sale began the season as a starter in the Chicago rotation. Fast forward to May 4, and Sale has been removed from the starting role (first reported by Chicago Tribune's Mark Gonzalez) with a 3-1 record, 2.81 ERA and 1.00 WHIP and will replace Santiago as the team's closer.
Sale reportedly has a tender elbow. Although I'm confused why he moves from pitching every fifth day to possibly every other day, I do understand throwing less pitches overall could preserve his career (he's only 23!).
Sale is owned in 57 percent of all FOXSports.com fantasy baseball leagues. So, if you are in need of saves, make the move now.
Dylan Axelrod (starter to replace Sale) posted a 2-1 record with a 1.08 ERA, 26 K's, four walks in 25 innings pitched at Triple A Charlotte.
Unless your league tracks HOLDS, I would feel comfortable dropping Santiago.
Update 10:00 PM (EST): Matt Thornton blew a save against the Tigers Friday night. Addison Reed may also fill in as closer if Sale needs time for his elbow to heal.
