Sarah Fuller thanks Vanderbilt for 'amazing opportunity' after season comes to an end

The SEC announced Monday that the scheduled game between Vanderbilt and Georgia has been canceled and declared a no-contest after the Commodores could not meet the minimum roster requirements to compete. That decision ends Vanderbilt's 2020 season and it also means the end of Sarah Fuller's college football career. The first woman to play in a Power Five college football game thanked the Vanderbilt football program for giving her the opportunity to make history.

"It looks like my time as a football player has come to an end," Fuller wrote on Twitter. "I would like to thank the entire Vanderbilt football team, coaches, and support staff for this amazing opportunity to be a part of this program."

Fuller is a senior and will not be available to play next season, but her time as a college athlete is not over yet, as she is also the goalkeeper for Vanderbilt's women's soccer team. Fuller was called upon to take up kicking duties for Vanderbilt's football team when the program had lost its kickers due to COVID protocol.

The 21-year-old joined the team and then became not just the first woman to play in a Power Five college football game but the first woman to score points in a Power Five college football game, kicking two extra points last week against Tennessee.

Despite sexist online trolls saying Fuller did not belong on a college football field, it sounds like Fuller had an overwhelmingly positive experience as Vanderbilt's kicker, and she hopefully opened the door for other women to get a chance to play in the future.
