10 upcoming video game movie and TV adaptations that might actually be awesome

When it comes to video games and their movie and TV adaptations, there simply aren't that many good ones. From early attempts at bringing the medium to the silver screen like Street Fighter and newer stinkers like Tomb Raider, neither the movie industry nor television networks can seem to quite get it right.

Luckily, there's a massive resurgence of new media centered around gaming and a slew of new movies on the rise. It's possible one of them could finally break the bad game movie curse once and for all because of their subject matter, directors, premises, and more. Here are 10 of the best video game movies and TV adaptations that could be awesome this time.

'The Super Mario Bros. Movie'

'The Super Mario Bros. Movie'
Universal Pictures

Though there was already a Mario movie adaptation years ago, there's always room for one more. This time, Guardians of the Galaxy star Chris Pratt is lending his voice to the popular plumber. An all-star cast, including Charlie Day as Luigi, Anya Taylor-Joy as Peach, and Jack Black as Bowser, support him. It looks like a whimsical, colorful adventure that's sure to take fans on a breathtaking ride through the Mushroom Kingdom.

'The Last of Us'

'The Last of Us'
HBO

HBO's adaptation of the gritty PlayStation series promises to take everything that made the games memorable and translate it to the small screen. Helmed by Naughty Dog head Neil Druckmann and Chernobyl's Craig Mazin, it's tapped The Mandalorian's Pedro Pascal as Joel, with Game of Thrones' Bella Ramsey as Ellie. When it debuts on the cable network, it promises to bring some serious drama and visceral violence with the gruesome Clickers. It'll also come packing star power, with actors like Nick Offerman and Gabriel Luna taking on supporting roles.

'God of War'

'God of War'
Sony Interactive Entertainment

Amazon is bringing a live-action God of War series to fruition, and it'll further explore the story that developer Santa Monica Studio explored in 2018's God of War. Kratos and Atreus will make their way to the highest peak of the nine realms in Norse mythology on a personal mission. God of War and God of War Ragnarok were extremely well-received games in their own right beyond their reboots of the classic God of War PlayStation franchise. Further, this series would lend itself well to live-action carnage and heart-wrenching scenes like those we first saw in the games.

'Gears of War'

'Gears of War'
Epic Games

This Xbox original has been the go-to series for carnage and bustin' grubs since it debuted on Xbox 360. Now, Netflix and The Coalition have joined forces to bring it to life as a movie and an animated series. There are no details on casting just yet (Dave Bautista as Marcus Fenix, please!), but with a straightforward narrative that focuses on curb-stomping and saving the world, this is one storyline that'll lend itself well to a blockbuster action movie.

'Death Stranding'

'Death Stranding'
Kojima Productions

Developer Hideo Kojima is all about movies, and though he's a video game developer, he's got his share of cinematic experience. His studio, Kojima Productions, has joined with Barbarian producer Alex Lebovici's Hammerstone Studios to create a movie based on his ambitious game Death Stranding. There are scant details about what it will offer, but it's set to "introduce new elements and characters within the Death Stranding universe."

'Borderlands'

'Borderlands'
Gearbox Software

The Borderlands movie has been in the works for some time, so it's had plenty of time to be polished and ready for primetime. Eli Roth is tagging in with the director, and Chernobyl' s Craig Mazin has been working on the screenplay, with much of the main cast confirmed. Cate Blanchett will play Lilith, with Kevin Hart as Roland, Jamie Lee Curtis as Tannis, and Jack Black as Claptrap. It's an irreverent, hilarious series all its own, and it should be a fun and gut-busting popcorn flick for gaming fans if it follows the games faithfully.

'Assassin's Creed'

'Assassin's Creed'
Ubisoft

Netflix is adding another game-centric adventure to its stable with Assassin's Creed, executive produced by Ubisoft's Jason Altman and Danielle Kreinik. According to the publisher, it will be an "epic, genre-bending live-action adaptation" planned to "tap into the iconic video game's trove of dynamic stories." It isn't clear what game the show will follow or which assassins, but this is just one part of several planned media projects centered around Assassin's Creed.

'BioShock'

'BioShock'
2K Games

Netflix and Take-Two have been working diligently on bringing a new BioShock movie to fruition. Yes, there was already a film in the works from Universal quite a while ago, but that one is no more. The new version, however, will feature Hunger Games director Francis Lawrence as director. Blade Runner 2049 Michael Green will write the script, per Netflix, and the movie has been confirmed to be "true to the game itself." That could mean a few harrowing scenes, as the movie has viewers encounter Andrew Ryan or the creepy yet cuddly Little Sisters. Most importantly, though? Live-action Big Daddies.

'Fallout'

'Fallout'
Bethesda Softworks

Not to be outdone by Netflix, Prime Video is adding another series to its stable with Fallout. It's being turned into a show featuring Walton Goggins, Kyle MacLachlan, and Ella Purnell. Adapted from the game series by Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy, it's set to premiere just in time for the franchise's 25th anniversary. We still don't know a lot about the series, but like many of the other shows and movies on this list, it's planned to follow a significant portion of the games it's based on.

'Silent Hill'

'Silent Hill'
Konami

Silent Hill fans have plenty to be scared of, but not the fact that there's another movie on the way. This one might actually be good. Return to Silent Hill is in the works from director Christophe Gans, and this time around, it's a complete reboot of the films that came before it. It'll follow a plotline similar to Silent Hill 2, where a man will journey to the creepy town in search of his lost love. He'll also be plagued by weird monsters, terrifying nurses, and lots of fog.
