20 movies and shows that you’re better off staying at home and watching New Year's Eve

20 movies and shows that you’re better off staying at home and watching New Year's Eve

For some, New Year’s Eve is a time to party away the night and end of the year. For others, the idea of that is an absolute nightmare. For those of you who fall into the latter category, this list of 20 binge-worthy movies/TV shows is for you. All of these films and TV shows were new in 2018, though for the shows that are past the first season, it’s OK if you go back and watch the pre-2018 season(s) (which is why they’re also included here). That actually probably makes for a better binge-watching experience. This is also assuming you’re not just watching SyFy’s “Twilight Zone” marathon.

These are just streaming options: There's a whole other world when it comes to renting or buying. (The whole other world is “Crazy Rich Asians” and “A Simple Favor.”)

"Salt, Fat, Acid, Heat” (Netflix)

"Salt, Fat, Acid, Heat” (Netflix)

If you’re into cooking shows but looking for something a little different, then “Salt, Fat, Acid, Heat” is for you and your binge-watching needs. Eater put it best: “The show is full of sensual, cinematic food footage — the kind that fans of Chef’s Table and Ugly Delicious will instantly warm to — but it’s also a reminder of the way that real people eat off camera, with unrestrained delight and eagerness.”

"Schitt’s Creek,” Seasons 1-4 (Netflix)

"Schitt’s Creek,” Seasons 1-4 (Netflix)

You know how Netflix changed the name of the terrific “Scrotal Recall” to “Lovesick” because, well, it was called “Scrotal Recall” (which was honestly a great name, just to be clear)? Well, Pop TV is never going to do that with “Schitt’s Creek.” Nor should it have to, as it is one of the funniest, charming, secretly sweet shows on television. Plus, it’s scientifically proven: You can never go wrong with the comedic superpowers of Eugene Levy and Catherine O’Hara combined.

“Game Night” (HBO Now | HBO Go)

“Game Night” (HBO Now | HBO Go)

One of the funniest R-rated comedies of the year, “Game Night” and an actual game night might actually be the best use of your New Year’s Eve. If you just want to turn New Year’s Eve into a Rachel McAdams Appreciation Night, that’s also a great use of your time.

"Lovesick," Seasons 1-3 (Netflix)

"Lovesick," Seasons 1-3 (Netflix)

After bringing it up with “Schitt’s Creek,” it would be wrong not to also recommend “Lovesick,” especially if you want a nice, romantic — hey, even if you’re just by yourself — New Year’s Eve night in.

"Life Itself” (Amazon Video)

"Life Itself” (Amazon Video)

Dan Fogelman’s “Life Itself” — starring Olivia Wilde and Oscar Isaac as a couple who “lead a multigenerational love story spanning both decades and continents, from the streets of New York to the Spanish countryside, and are all connected by a single event” — has not been well-reviewed at all (except by Warren Beatty.) But there’s something to that — to wanting to see why exactly that is, especially to ring in the New Year.

"American Vandal," Seasons 1-2 (Netflix)

"American Vandal," Seasons 1-2 (Netflix)

If you want to laugh — ignoring the point about the show getting only two seasons — and don’t mind a little innocent crudeness, you really cannot go wrong with either season of “American Vandal.” It just depends on your end-of-the-year sensibilities: dick jokes or poop jokes?

“Sorry To Bother You” (Hulu)

“Sorry To Bother You” (Hulu)

One of the best and most innovative movies of the year, “Sorry To Bother You” is recommended to watch if you really want to think to close out the year. Then you'll wonder how you surprisingly avoided spoilers about the movie because it’s actually kind of amazing how tight-lipped people have been — even to this point — about what this movie actually is. It’s delightful! Crazy, but delightful. Seriously, the “white voice” is just scratching the surface.

“Springsteen on Broadway” (Netflix)

“Springsteen on Broadway” (Netflix)

Do you like Springsteen? Do you like Broadway? If you want to have a chill party on New Year’s Eve and you’re not going to just play Carly Rae Jepsen on repeat, watching some of Bruce Springsteen’s Tony Award-winning show is the next best thing.

“Blockers” (HBO Now | HBO Go)

“Blockers” (HBO Now | HBO Go)

Despite the presumably reductive premise, “Blockers” was one of the comedic surprises of 2018. So let it — and John Cena’s…mass — surprise you to end 2018. Ya gotta laugh, after all.

“Great News,” Seasons 1-2 (Netflix)

“Great News,” Seasons 1-2 (Netflix)

Perhaps one day “Great News” will get the respect and reconsideration it deserves. At the very least, Briga Heelan should get the respect and reconsideration as the comedic force she is. So should Nicole Richie, actually. Watch this show for some quick laughs on New Year’s Eve, but don’t be surprised if at midnight you want to shout “JUSTICE FOR ‘GREAT NEWS’” while everyone else is shouting “HAPPY NEW YEAR.”

“Love, Simon” (HBO Now | HBO Go)

“Love, Simon” (HBO Now | HBO Go)

"Love, Simon" is probably one of the most unexpected movie hits of the year, but it's also a heartwarming way to close out your year. The Greg Berlanti-directed teen romcom has been compared to the '80s films of John Hughes, which is quite the analogy — especially for a coming-of-age movie about a closeted teen boy grappling with his sexuality.

"Rob Riggle’s Ski Master Academy," Season 1 (Sony Crackle)

"Rob Riggle’s Ski Master Academy," Season 1 (Sony Crackle)

“Rob Riggle’s Ski Master Academy” is probably not on many people’s year-end best of lists, but that’s disappointing because it’s a funny show (especially when it comes to Eliza Coupe’s performance). If you just want to laugh 2018 away and want very little to think about, get your “Ski Master” on.

“The Detour,” Seasons 1-3 (Hulu)

“The Detour,” Seasons 1-3 (Hulu)

“The Detour” is one of the most intricate, complex, crude and underrated comedies on television. It’s great. From a family road trip gone wrong to said family now on the lam, the series is one that plays even better on binge-watch, especially with all the running and background gags that pile up.

“Dumplin’” (Netflix)

“Dumplin’” (Netflix)

It’s hard to say this is the newest Netflix original movie, because there’s seemingly a new Netflix original movie every other day. But this is the newest high-profile Netflix original movie, as it co-stars Jennifer Aniston and has the musical stylings of Dolly Parton (including six original songs written just for the film) as the soundtrack. Based on the 2015 young adult novel of the same name, in the movie, “to prove a point about measuring up and fitting in, Texas teen Willowdean Dickson enters a local pageant run by her ex-beauty queen mom.”

“Dogs” (Netflix)

“Dogs” (Netflix)

Spoiler alert: All of the dogs in “Dogs” make it out of “Dogs” alive. If you saw the trailer, you were probably worried, but Netflix’s Twitter eased those fears pretty much as soon as the dog-umentary dropped. But if you want to cry tears of joy over dogs being everyone’s best friends and superheroes, this is the thing to watch.

"The Christmas Chronicles” (Netflix)

"The Christmas Chronicles” (Netflix)

Yes, this is all about New Year’s Eve, but if you don’t think it’s too late to still watch a Christmas movie, you can’t go wrong with hot Santa Kurt Russell. Seriously, it’s a fun movie to end the year with, even if you’re not just watching for hot Santa Kurt Russell.

“Killing Eve,” Season 1 (Hulu)

“Killing Eve,” Season 1 (Hulu)

Finally “Killing Eve” is available to stream! Don’t leave your home. Instead, let psychopath assassin Villanelle (Jodie Comer) into your heart to ring in the New Year. “Killing Eve” is honestly the type of show that might even work best as binged, so now you can start your New Year off as your best self — the self that binge-watches Sandra Oh and Comer’s cat-and-mouse routine.

"Forever," Season 1 (Amazon Video)

"Forever," Season 1 (Amazon Video)

If you love Maya Rudolph and aren’t going to just watch this classic “Saturday Night Live” sketch, then you should watch “Forever.” And then you should spend all of 2019 wondering why no one else you know seemed to watch “Forever.” It’s probably the most underrated new series of 2018, and it’s a “high-concept” show that’s neither too dark nor too complicated to get into.

"On My Block,” Season 1 (Netflix)

"On My Block,” Season 1 (Netflix)

Actually, “On My Block” might be the most underrated new series of 2018, but that could also be a case of apples and oranges. While “Forever” is a comedy about a marriage in a rut, “On My Block” is a coming-of-age story about teens living in an inner-city Los Angeles neighborhood.

“Black Panther” (Netflix)

“Black Panther” (Netflix)

Ring in the New Year with a good, hearty “WAKANDA FOREVER”...and then maybe 2019 actually will be better. It has to be, right? (While it came out in 2017, if you want to make a Marvel night of it, “Thor: Ragnarok” definitely pairs well with “Black Panther.”)
