Captain Marvel is a gamer. Of course, you knew that already when Brie Larson uploaded a video showcasing her Animal Crossing island, and you should know that she, just like you, is looking forward to playing Princess Peach: Showtime!

In a press preview last week, the actor talked about her love for Nintendo games and how excited she is for Peach’s new adventure.

Larson recounted her childhood days of playing on the early Nintendo consoles. The memories of playing games like Super Mario Bros. and Animal Crossing connecting her and her sister make up some of the formative experiences of diving into the world of entertainment. It’s not a new story either, as you may recall a similar conversation between Brie and Milaine, her sister, in an ad for the Nintendo Switch during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“[Video games] are like the thing that’s connected me to my sister,” she told THR. “My mom says her favorite sound is hearing me and my sister laughing while we’re playing video games together. I think I’ve probably played every Nintendo game that’s ever come out at this point, and so it’s just part of my life. It always has been.”

As for Princess Peach, Larson talked about how she grew up with the character, connecting with her ability to keep up with her peers in games like Mario Kart and Mario Party.

“It’s great to join her in her journey. I’ve just loved her my whole life, so to see her have this stand-alone game and not just that but to have all these different facets and different characters and her own gameplay is just a thrill.”

The gameplay loop of Princess Peach: Showtime! has the heroine transform into different variants, gaining new abilities across different levels dressed as a theater production. Which Peach was Larson’s pick during the demo?

“Like, I started off with Cowgirl," she told ELLE. "Cowgirl Peach was huge for me that I thought, 'Oh my gosh, does it get better than that?',  “But then I’m suddenly decorating cakes and then I got a piece of bamboo, and I’m underwater as a ninja. Oh, and the figure skater, I didn’t know about the figure skater because I guess that was just announced. So I’m just really excited.”

But the one question that most Nintendo fans would want to ask her is - does she like Zelda games? The answer is, of course, a resounding yes. Larson states that The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is her favorite game of all time, but that may soon be dethroned by its sequel, Tears of the Kingdom. Beyond Animal Crossing, her go-to game for a co-op session with friends is WarioWare: Move It! Speaking of Animal Crossing, Larson provided a harrowing update on the status of her island.

“I don’t really want to talk about it,” she told ELLE. “I’m concerned that there’s gonna be a lot of like, passive-aggressive neighbors on my island. I just need to start over. I just need to start over. I’m too scared. I’ve let people down.”

Brie Larson's latest film, The Marvels, is currently available to stream on Disney+. Princess Peach: Showtime! releases on March 22, 2024, for Nintendo Switch.
