Don Johnson 'in heavy prep' for the 'Nash Bridges' reboot

Don Johnson is dipping his toe in the sitcom waters for the first time on NBC's Kenan, but the Golden Globe-winning actor has not lost touch with his earlier work.

Johnson joined The Ellen DeGeneres Show and gave an update on the forthcoming Nash Bridges reboot for USA Network (7:15-mark):

"We're in heavy prep for a reboot of Nash Bridges," the 71-year-old said. "We find Nash some years later, and Cheech (Marin) is gonna come back and join me, and Jeff Perry, and we've got a pretty exciting show that we're prepping in San Francisco right now."

Lesley Goldberg first broke the reboot news for The Hollywood Reporter in July 2019, noting that it was set to be "a two-hour TV special" with hopes that it would become "a back-door pilot of sorts for a broader drama series." At the time, Johnson was the only cast member attached to the project.

The original series was created by Carlton Cuse and ran for six seasons on CBS from 1996 to 2001. Johnson played the titular character, an inspector at the San Francisco Police Department. Marin played Inspector/Lieutenant Joe Dominguez, partnered with Nash, and Perry played Inspector Harvey Leek.

Outside of Johnson, Perry and Jodi Lyn O'Keefe, who played Nash's daughter Cassidy, were the only cast members to appear in all 122 episodes. Marin appeared in 120 episodes.

Johnson had already made a name for himself before embodying Nash, especially with his Detective James Crockett role on Miami Vice, but he hasn't had a lasting television role since.
