Drew Barrymore thought Dakota Johnson's awkward interview with Ellen DeGeneres 'was amazing'

We're nearing the two-year anniversary of Dakota Johnson calling out Ellen DeGeneres on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, and it is just as gloriously awkward now as it was in November 2019.

Drew Barrymore agrees.

Johnson visited The Drew Barrymore Show for the actress-turned-daytime host's "Drew's News" segment, which led to a conversation about how well people know their neighbors. Johnson shared two of her neighbors are Jimmy Kimmel and his wife, Molly McNearney.

"They're great neighbors, except they have a lot of parties and they don't invite me," the former Fifty Shades of Grey franchise lead told Barrymore.

"Is this for real?" Barrymore asked. "Because, you know, people have gotten in trouble for claiming not being invited to your parties. That was amazing, by the way. Like, amazing!"

Johnson laughed.

It was subtle yet undeniable shade toward DeGeneres, as the 2019 interview in question featured Johnson rebuffing DeGeneres' claim that she had not been invited to her 30th birthday.

"That's not the truth, Ellen," Johnson said then. "You were invited. Last time I was on the show, last year, you gave me a bunch of s—t about not inviting you, but I didn't even know you wanted to be invited."

"Well, who doesn't want to be invited to a party?" DeGeneres countered.

Johnson: "Well, I didn't even know you liked me."

DeGeneres: "Of course I like you. You knew I liked you. You've been on the show many times, and don't I show like?"

Johnson: "But I did invite you, and you didn't come."

When DeGeneres doubled down on not receiving an invite, Johnson expertly rebutted, "Ask everybody. Ask Jonathan, your producer."

The Ellen producers then jumped in and said DeGeneres had been out of town.

When it was announced in May that the Ellen show will end after its current 19th season wraps in 2022, Twitter was set aflame by people referencing Johnson's ether.
