Could a 24 return actually happen? Kiefer Sutherland opens the door for a reprisal of Jack Bauer in his latest interview with GQ.

The one way to get 24 junkies’ blood pumping is to have Kiefer Sutherland open the door for a reprisal of Jack Bauer and a return for the iconic series. And that’s exactly what he just did.

In an interview with GQ, the 55-year-old actor expressed interest in returning as Jack Bauer in 24 if the story were right.

“I miss it. It was an incredible experience,” said Sutherland. “I have learned that you’re just better off not to be definitive about your answer of whether you will do something or not do something. I love playing that character. I do believe the story is unresolved. If something were to be written that made sense to me and that I thought was going to contribute to the franchise then I would be behind it, even if my participation in that were to be limited.”

24 originally premiered in November of 2001 on the heels of 9/11 in the United States and ran for eight seasons until 2010. Sutherland returned in 2014 for a limited episode ninth season but it has been all quiet on the 24 front since, outside of 24: Legacy which didn’t involve Sutherland as Bauer.

The series captivated audiences with its “real-time” format and the ability to leave audiences hanging in many of its 24 episodes each season. The ability to do that comes from strong writing and, if there is going to be another season of 24, that is a must according to Sutherland.

“My involvement will always be predicated on what I perceive is the quality of the writing. If Howard Gordon is motivated to do it, we’ll see what happens.”
