Nicole Kidman resents question about Tom Cruise: 'It feels to me almost sexist'

Nicole Kidman has been married to Keith Urban since 2006, but she can't escape questions about her long-past marriage to Tom Cruise.

The Oscar winner spoke to The Guardian about her portrayal of the late Lucille Ball in Aaron Sorkin's new drama Being the Ricardos, and she specifically had a lot to say about acting out Ball's relationship with the late Desi Arnaz, played by Javier Bardem. (Arnaz and Ball married in 1940 and divorced in 1960, and they co-starred on I Love Lucy from 1951-57.)

"It’s about a creative and romantic relationship that doesn’t work out," Kidman explained. "But from it come some extraordinary things. And I love that. I love that it’s not a happy ending. This film says you can make an extraordinary relationship thrive and leave remnants of it that exist forever. Yeah, that’s really gorgeous. You can’t make people behave how you want them to, and sometimes you’re going to fall in love with someone who isn’t going to be the person you spend the rest of your life with. And I think that’s all very relatable. You may have kids with them. You may not, but they were very much in love."

The Guardian's Eva Wiseman then asked if Kidman was also talking about Cruise, whom she was married to from 1990 until their divorce was finalized in 2001.

"Oh, my God, no, no," Kidman assured. "Absolutely not. No. I mean, that’s, honestly, so long ago that that isn’t in this equation. So no. And I would ask not to be pigeonholed that way, either. It feels to me almost sexist, because I’m not sure anyone would say that to a man. And at some point, you go, 'Give me my life. In its own right.'"

Cruise and Kidman adopted two children, 28-year-old Isabella and 26-year-old Connor, together before their split. She also shares daughters Faith, 11, and Sunday, 13, with Urban.

Being the Ricardos is now available to stream on Amazon Prime Video.
