Official cause of death revealed for star of 'The Wire' Michael K. Williams

Michael K. Williams died Sept. 6, and his death was reported to be under investigation as a possible drug overdose after the 54-year-old actor's body was found at his Brooklyn apartment.

New York City's medical examiner confirmed that to be the case Friday, as relayed by The New York Times. Williams' death has been ruled as an accidental drug overdose and "acute intoxication by the combined effects of fentanyl, p-fluorofentanyl, heroin and cocaine."

"The presence of multiple drugs in Mr. Williams’s system at the time of his death does not necessarily indicate whether he took those drugs together or separately, or whether he used them knowingly or unknowingly," NYT reporters Jonah E. Bromwich and Michael Gold specified.

Williams racked up 110 acting credits throughout his career, but he was best known as stick-up man Omar Little across all five seasons of David Simon's HBO crime drama The Wire. Because The Wire was set within Baltimore's drug scene, the Baltimore Ravens honored Williams before their game against the Kansas City Chiefs last Sunday night:

Williams had been nominated for five Primetime Emmys since 2015, including for outstanding supporting actor in a drama series at last Sunday's 73rd Primetime Emmy Awards for his work as Montrose Freeman in Lovecraft Country. Kerry Washington presented the category and gave a heartfelt tribute to Williams:

The award went to The Crown's Tobias Menzies, who wasn't in attendance but dedicated the win to Williams on Twitter afterward.
