Stephen King lists his top-five favorite stories he's written

Stephen King is one of the most prolific authors to ever live, publishing nearly 100 novels or novellas since 1974's Carrie.

For The Late Show with Stephen Colbert on Monday (Aug. 9), the 73-year-old horror legend was tasked with something even more daunting: the definitive all-time top-five favorite list of his books or short stories.

"My favorite short story would be called 'Survivor Type,' which was about a physician who gets stranded on a little island, and he's smuggling heroin, and he's starving, so he eats himself piece-by-piece," he began, then joked the story was "family-friendly" and "could be a Disney cartoon."

"I like Misery the novel a lot," King continued. "That was kind of fun. It was a fun book to write. ... I like Lisey's Story very much. It's a series. It's now streaming on Apple Plus. I held onto that for a long time. The Stand, and there's one called The Body. And Billy Summers, the current one!"

Billy Summers arrived last Tuesday (Aug. 3) and according to King's official website, the plot is very on brand: "Billy Summers is a man in a room with a gun. He's a killer for hire and the best in the business. But he'll do the job only if the target is a truly bad guy. And now Billy wants out. But first there is one last hit. Billy is among the best snipers in the world, a decorated Iraq war vet, a Houdini when it comes to vanishing after the job is done. So what could possibly go wrong?"

While promoting his new novel on The View last week, he revealed his plans to "write a book next that deals directly with the coronavirus."
