The best '90s TV and movie reboots (so far)

On Jan. 8, "Party of Five" premieres on Freeform. No, you didn't misread that: Freeform has developed a reboot of FOX's "Party of Five" (1994-2000). The latest '90s reboot on the books, this version of "Party of Five" now deals with 100 percent less dead parents and 100 percent more deportation. And in case you're wondering who's to blame for "ruining your childhood" by making this show "political" now... that would be Amy Lippman and Christopher Keyser — you know, the creators of the original "Party of Five."

In honor of the premiere of this new version of "Party of Five," Yardbarker is looking at 10 of the best '90s TV and movie reboots (so far). And just to be clear, "reboots" = "remakes" or "reimaginings." There will be no "revivals" and "continuations" on this list, as words have meaning.

"The Fast and The Furious" (2001)

"The Fast and The Furious" (2001)

"The Fast and The Furious" (1991) is not an official remake of "Point Break" (2001)... but, come on: "The Fast and The Furious" is totally a remake of "Point Break." And it's a better one than the actual "Point Break" remake from 2015 as well as the origin point for, arguably, the greatest (and most surprising) feature film franchise in history.

"Roswell, New Mexico" (2019-present)

"Roswell, New Mexico" (2019-present)
Ursula Coyote/The CW

Like the original WB-turned-UPN series "Roswell" (1999-2002), "Roswell, New Mexico" is actually based on the "Roswell High" series of books (only, in this case, it ages these characters up to 10 years after their high school days). But anyone who watches the series and is familiar with the inspirations of the reboot's developer, Carina Adly Mackenzie, should be aware of just how much of the series' sensibilities were directly inspired by the original series.

"Charmed" (2018-present)

"Charmed" (2018-present)
The CW

Currently in its much different second season, new "Charmed" really made it on this list based on the strength of its first season. In that first season, new "Charmed" proved itself not to be the self-serious show everyone expected it to be (which it kind of has become now), instead able to bring up the humor and camp just like the original series (1998-2006), only without the male gaze driving things this time around.

"The First Wives Club" (2019-present)

"The First Wives Club" (2019-present)
BET

Based on the 1996 film starring Goldie Hawn, Diane Keaton and Bette Midler, Tracy Oliver's television adaptation of "The First Wives Club" begs the question: If a show airs on BET Plus, is it even possible for anyone to know how good it is? As the only two reviews of the show on Metacritic (from Variety and from The Hollywood Reporter) suggest, the answer is no, unfortunately.

"Power Rangers" (2017)

"Power Rangers" (2017)

Spoiler alert: The original "Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers" (1993-1996) wasn't actually good, and that's been the case for all of the subsequent series in the franchise. But that didn't stop people's nostalgia from tanking this movie. Naomi Scott and Elizabeth Banks didn't deserve for this to happen to them twice [see also: "Charlie's Angels" (2019)].

"10 Things I Hate About You" (2009-2010)

"10 Things I Hate About You" (2009-2010)
ABC Family

The key to accepting ABC Family's "10 Things I Hate About You" into your heart was simple: Forget everything you knew about the movie (1999). (I know, I know — Larry Miller returning as the Stratford father made that harder.) Once you did that, you could accept it as the charming teen comedy that it was.

"Nikita" (2010-2013)

"Nikita" (2010-2013)
The CW

An adaptation of Luc Besson's film "La Femme Nikita" (1990) and the second television adaptation [after USA Network's "La Femme Nikita" (1997-2001)], The CW's "Nikita" starred Maggie Q as the titular character. Regularly on the bubble during its four-season run, "Nikita" was arguably the spiritual successor to "Alias"...without all the complicated mythology tacked onto it.

"12 Monkeys" (2015-2018)

"12 Monkeys" (2015-2018)
Syfy

They said it couldn't be done. They said they couldn't make a competent television show out of Terry Gilliam's neo-noir time travel movie "12 Monkeys" (1995), yet they did. They very much did. And it did so with Emily Hampshire giving Brad Pitt a run for his money as the gender-bent approach to his character in the film, Jennifer Goines (played by Emily Hampshire).

"Melrose Place" (2009-2010)

"Melrose Place" (2009-2010)
The CW

No, "Melrose Place 2.0" wasn't really all that good, but it provided good things, like:

  • Literally everything Katie Cassidy did on the show
  • Ashlee Simpson's crazy eyes
  • Literally everything Katie Cassidy wore on the show
  • The "hookers on a boat" episode
  • The entire "Dr. Hooker" arc
  • Again, see everything Katie Cassidy did and wore on the show

Original recipe "Melrose Place" (1992-1999) had absolutely none of that, and somehow it lasted for seven seasons instead of just the one.

"Anna Karenina" (2012) and "Little Women" (2019)

"Anna Karenina" (2012) and "Little Women" (2019)

Technically, these are movies from novels that came out way before the 1990s (1877 and 1868, respectively), but they both had notable '90s remakes (on top of all other remakes) in 1997 and 1994, then went on to have 2000s-era remakes. (The 1997 remake of "Anna Karenina" was critically panned though.) The Keira Knightley-led version of "Anna Karenina" (directed by Joe Wright and written by Tom Stoppard) is truly one of the most visually stunning films of the past decade, and obviously, director Greta Gerwig's "Little Women" is the critically acclaimed talk of the town right now.

Despite her mother's wishes, LaToya Ferguson is a writer living in Los Angeles. If you want to talk The WB's image campaigns circa 1999-2003, LaToya's your girl.
