Watch: Mark Zuckerberg wins gold, silver medals in first jiu-jitsu competition

Facebook founder and Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg mastered the world of social media, and now it appears he’s setting his sights on mastering the world of combat sports.

The 38-year-old internet entrepreneur, who trains with Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt Dave Camarillo on the Guerrilla Jiu-Jitsu team, recently posted on his Facebook and Instagram pages that he had won gold and silver medals at his first jiu-jitsu tournament over the weekend in California.

His posts collected more than 700,000 likes between the two social media platforms. A video of one of his matches can be seen below.

Competing in the white belt Master 2 lightweight division, Zuckerberg medaled in both the gi and no-gi divisions, according to Jits Magazine. A white belt is the lowest level of the Brazilian jiu-jitsu ranking system designated for beginner students.

Zuckerberg began studying and training in jiu-jitsu during the COVID-19 pandemic. He stated on an episode of “The Joe Rogan Experience,” hosted by UFC commentator Joe Rogan, that discovering mixed martial arts has improved his focus in other areas of his life.

“The question isn’t how did I get into it, it’s how did I not know about it until right now?” Zuckerberg said. “From, like, the very first session that I did, like, five minutes in—where has this been my whole life? … MMA is like the perfect thing. Because it’s like, if you stop paying attention for one second, you’re going to end up on the bottom. … After an hour or two of working out or rolling or wrestling with friends or training with different folks, it’s like, now I’m ready to go solve whatever problem at work for the day and like I’ve fully processed all the different news for the day.”
