Which songs are turning 20 in 2024?

The year 2004 was a defining year in pop music. Destiny's Child released their final album, Gwen Stefani embarked on a solo career, and Kanye West was ready to showcase his talent as more than a producer for other artists. It also displayed how genres and sounds continued to change throughout the early 2000s compared to earlier eras.

Just three years after releasing his sophomore album, My Way, Usher returned with his magnum opus, Confessions, led by the hit single "Yeah!" Joined by Lil Jon and Ludacris, Usher details meeting a woman at a club, he's entranced by her dance moves and contemplates leaving the club with her. "Yeah!" is still one of Usher's biggest hits to date, it spent twelve weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100.

In 2004, American Idol album Kelly Clarkson released her sophomore album, Breakaway. The album's lead eponymous single finds Clarkson dreaming of change and leaving somewhere she's always known. As she sings on the hook, "I'll spread my wings, and I'll learn how to fly / I'll do what it takes 'til I touch the sky / And I'll make a wish, take a chance, make a change, and break away."

She knows she's not giving up her goodies to just anyone who comes around. The song reached No. 1 on both the Billboard Hot 100 and Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs charts.

In 2004, punk rock band Green Day released its seventh studio album, American Idiot. Led by the eponymous single, the band takes on a form of protest, calling for people to be individuals and calling out the American media for portraying some stories in a certain light. The song was nominated quite a few times at the 2005 Grammy Awards, including Best Rock Song and Record of the Year.

Case in point, West and Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis co-produced Janet Jackson's hit single "I Want You." The production takes inspiration from the retro soul era in typical West form. Jackson uses "I Want You" to detail her desire for a certain someone.
