The 94th Academy Awards turned into a WWE PPV when Will Smith took offense to a Chris Rock joke and proceeded to slap the comedian on stage.

Well, the 94th Academy Awards ceremony took a fascinating turn when eventually Oscar winner, Will Smith, slapped comedian and host, Chris Rock following a joke directed at Smith’s wife, Jada Pinkett Smith.

The joke, telling Jada he was ready for G.I. Jane II, seemed innocent enough but given Pinkett-Smith’s alopecia diagnosis, it clearly rubbed the King Richard star the wrong way.

It says a lot about where people see the Academy Awards ceremony in recent years as a large number of people felt that this was a work akin to something you would see from the WWE. The reality of it is it wasn’t. Although, the Academy sure doesn’t mind the fact that EVERYONE is now talking about the event.

The Academy condoned any “acts of violence” following the incident and reports say that Rock does not plan on pressing charges which ultimately amount to an assault.

“The Academy does not condone violence of any form. Tonight we are delighted to celebrate our 94th Academy Awards winners, who deserve this moment of recognition from their peers and movie lovers around the world.”

Later in the evening, Smith won the Oscar for Best Actor following his performance in King Richard and upon accepting the award, apologized to the crowd and said “Love will make you do crazy things”.

Smith may eventually be asked to return his Oscar Trophy as people have cited the Academy’s Code of Conduct, implemented in 2017, as condoning such an act. Stay tuned.
