Angels Have A Hilarious Welcome For A New Star
Dave Nelson-USA TODAY Sports

The Los Angeles Angels brought in Brett Phillips to be their fourth outfielder.

The agreement was of the one-year variety, closed out at $1.2 million.

The Angels’ front office guaranteed Phillips he would be the team’s fourth outfielder even though they have former first overall pick Mickey Moniak and top prospect Jo Adell.

Whether they can keep all of them up in the big leagues despite also having Mike Trout, Hunter Renfroe and Taylor Ward is a discussion for another day.

Los Angeles made sure to welcome their new player.

Not with a fancy hype video like the Pittsburgh Pirates, but with a cool and funny post.

“Just a pair of two-way legends on the mound at the Big A,” the Angels tweeted with a picture of Shohei Ohtani and Brett Phillips dominating on the mound.

Well, at least one of them was dominating, and since we won’t tell you, you will have to guess.

Fine, we will tell you.

Ohtani won the AL MVP award in 2021 with a historic two-way performance that included 46 home runs and a 3.18 ERA.

Last season, he came in second, but was equally dominant: a 2.33 ERA and 34 home runs.

Phillips, a fantastic defender but a below-average hitter, is also famous for having pitched four games for the Tampa Bay Rays in the last two seasons.

He is perhaps the icon of position players pitching.

Whenever there was a blowout and Tampa was involved, he would get the ball.

Between the two seasons, he has a 16.20 ERA in five innings.

We would bet that we haven’t seen the last of him on a Major League mound.
