Another Possible Blow for the Blue Jays Pitching Prospect Department

It’s been a rough first month for the Toronto Blue Jays pitching prospects. Ricky Tiedemann is on the shelf at Triple-A with ulnar nerve inflammation and Brandon Barriera underwent Tommy John surgery and an internal brace procedure as part of a hybrid surgery. Now another pitching prospect could be going for surgery as Landen Maroudis is on the 7-day injured list with Single-A Dunedin due to a right elbow injury.

Blue Jays Unsure if Landen Maroudis Needs Surgery

Maroudis was pulled from his April 21 start after just 45 pitches in 2 1/3 innings. TSN’s Scott Mitchell reported that the club is still waiting for results on Maroudis’ elbow. The 19-year-old posted a 0.84 ERA, 0.66 WHIP and 12 strikeouts in 10 2/3 innings prior to landing on the injured list. The Blue Jays selected Maroudis at No. 121 in last year’s draft. He entered the year as Toronto’s No. 12 prospect per MLB Pipeline.

The Flordia native has done everything that the Blue Jays have hoped for. He’s leaning into everything in his development as he’s quickly started to transform his body into a pitcher’s build. Maroudis is hitting in the 94-96 mph range, which is where he topped out at in Calvary Christian High School. He’s even shown a promising changeup at his age and his breaking ball continues to be a difference-maker. At his age, Maroudis has plenty of runway to develop that further.

Like the other high-ranked teenagers- including Arjun Nimmala and Enmanuel Bonilla, the Blue Jays hope their investment in player development will pay off for Maroudis. Hopefully, the severity of Maroudis’ injury won’t require surgery. If he does, that’s a massive blow to another promising pitcher coming down the pipeline.
