Cincinnati Reds Roster Moves 4/24

The Cincinnati Reds are 13-10 heading into game three of four against the Philadelphia Phillies. They lost the first game of the series but won last night 8-1. Friday they head to Texas to take on the Rangers. The Reds enter play today sitting in third place in the NL Central, a series win over the Phillies would be a big boost before heading to Texas. Before today’s game, they made three roster moves!

LHP – Alex Young

Young was transferred from the 15-day injured list to the 60-day injured list with lower disc degeneration. Young made one appearance this spring for the Reds giving up four hits, five earned runs, two walks, and never recorded an out.

RHP – Ian Gibaut

Cincinnati sent Gibaut to Louisville Bats for a Triple-A rehab assignment. He has pitched in six games between High-A and Triple-A this year. He has zero wins, one loss, a combined 8.44 ERA, and a 1.69 WHIP over 5.1 innings of work.

OF – Peyton Burdict

The Reds claimed Burdict off waivers from the Baltimore Orioles today and optioned him to Triple-A where he will play for the Louisville Bats. He has played in 16 games for Norfolk the Triple-A affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles this year. He has 11 runs scored, 10 hits, three doubles, four home runs, nine RBIs, and one stolen base on the year. He was slashing .182/.333/.455 with a .755 OPS with Norfolk.

Wrap Up

It’s a shame Alex Young appears to be lost for the foreseeable future as the team needs a veteran left-hand reliever to rely on. Last year Young appeared in 63 games for the Reds with four wins and two losses. His ERA was 3.86 with a 1.36 WHIP over 53.2 innings of work. Signing Burdick from the Orioles can’t hurt considering the depth the Orioles have in the farm system why not grab a guy and see if he can stick with Louisville for a bit? Gibaut like Young was another reliable arm from the bullpen last year, he appeared in 74 games for the Reds a season ago. He had eight wins, four losses, an ERA of 3.33 along with a 1.28 WHIP last year from the bullpen. Having him back in the mix with the big club will be a nice boost for the bullpen as they head into May!
