The Cubs believe Amaya will need Tommy John surgery, meaning he will miss all of next season and perhaps some of the 2023 season if setbacks continue to happen.
The organization’s top catching prospect missed the last few months of the 2021 season due to what was described as a right forearm strain.
With no minor league season in 2020, Amaya has played a combined 33 games since the 2019 season ended.
Amaya, 23, had a .215/.406/.304 slash line is 23 games at Double-A Tennessee this past season.
