Bringing the camp roster down to 30 players, the Arizona Diamondbacks have opted to send catcher Jose Herrera to Triple-A Reno and have reassigned infielder Kevin Newman to Minor League camp.

Following Carson Kelly’s departure last season, Herrera assumed the role of backup catcher behind Gold Glove recipient Gabriel Moreno.

Herrera appeared in 41 games, maintaining a .208 batting average at the plate and successfully throwing out 22% of base runners.

With Herrera’s departure, Tucker Barnhart stands as the sole remaining catcher at camp. Barnhart joined the Diamondbacks on a minor league contract this offseason.

The veteran catcher spent eight years with the Cincinnati Reds, earning two Gold Gloves. Last year, he served in a backup capacity with the Chicago Cubs.

Barring any last-minute signings, it seems Barnhart will serve as Moreno’s backup for the upcoming season.
