Don Mattingly, Kevin Cash earn Manager of the Year honors

The Miami Marlins and Tampa Bay Rays fell short of their ultimate goals, but the Florida clubs received some deserved silverware on Tuesday.

Florida's Don Mattingly won National League Manager of the Year, while Tampa Bay's Kevin Cash earned the American League award. Mattingly received 20 first-place votes, per an ESPN story, while Cash received 22 of 30 first-place votes.

As ESPN noted, the Marlins experienced a coronavirus outbreak early in the season that threatened at least Miami's campaign and led to the club making 174 different roster moves and using 61 players overall. Despite facing many setbacks, Mattingly guided the Marlins to a 31-29 record and a playoff berth.

Miami downed the Chicago Cubs in the wild-card round but then lost to the Atlanta Braves in the NL divisional series.

Tampa Bay, meanwhile, finished with an AL-best 40 wins and then got past the Toronto Blue Jays, New York Yankees and Houston Astros to claim the pennant. The Rays fell to the Los Angeles Dodgers in the World Series.

Cash is the second Rays manager to win the award, as Joe Maddon did so in 2008 and 2011.
