Ex-Dodgers All-Star Still Is Available; Red Sox Are Logical Landing Spot

The Boston Red Sox still could use some more depth for the starting rotation.

Boston's starting rotation has led to plenty of headlines. It was the club's biggest issue last season and arguably is the biggest reason why the club didn't make the playoffs.

Luckily for Boston, there still are some options available that could help. The biggest player out there who still could be an option for the Red Sox is Jordan Montgomery. Boston continues to be linked to him but it's unclear if it is willing to shell out the money needed to sign him.

If the Red Sox ultimately don't end up landing Montgomery, it would make a lot of sense to bring someone in on a cheap deal to help the back of the rotation. Boston could then address the top of the rotation again later in the season possibly around the trade deadline depending on how the club is performing.

One player who could fit this description well is six-time All-Star Zack Greinke. He certainly isn't what he once was, but he is a veteran who could help and is looking for another opportunity, according to USA Today Sports' Bob Nightengale.

"Zack Greinke, 40, still wants to pitch another season after going 2-15 with a 5.06 ERA last season," Nightengale said. "If he returns, he has a chance to become only the 20th pitcher in history to record 3,000 strikeouts. He has 2,979 career strikeouts."

Greinke struggled in 2023 but was much more impressive in 2022. He had a 3.68 ERA in 26 starts with Kansas City in 2022 at 39 years old. He has spent time with the Royals, Milwaukee Brewers, Los Angeles Angels, Los Angeles Dodgers, Arizona Diamondbacks, and the Houston Astros throughout his illustrious 20-year career.

If Boston fails to land a top-of-the-rotation hurler, Greinke could be the type of player to bring in to compete for the No. 5 spot in the rotation.
