Intriguing Red Sox Fireballer Reportedly May Join Big League Club After Recent Hot Streak
Dale Zanine-USA TODAY Sports

The Boston Red Sox may be making some changes.

Boston recently took a chance on former San Diego Padres and Colorado Rockies hurler Dinelson Lamet with a minor league deal and it sounds like he may be getting a shot at a big league return. Lamet has been building up with the Triple-A Worcester Red Sox and reportedly was up in the big league clubhouse Monday, according to the Boston Globe's Alex Speier.

"Dinelson Lamet is in the Red Sox clubhouse," Speier said. "While Lamet is here with the Sox, Richard Bleier’s locker has been cleared."

It's unclear exactly what role Lamet could play with the big league club. If Boston were to officially call him up and add him to the 26-man active roster, the club would need to make a move to its 40-man roster and let someone go or move someone to the injured list. It sounds like left-handed hurler Richard Bleier could be the corresponding move, although nothing has been officially announced.

Boston could use another arm at the big league level and Lamet is a six-year veteran with an electric fastball. Lamet is in the 70th percentile in fastball velocity so far this season. The 31-year-old has bounced around between the starting rotation and bullpen throughout his career and mightily struggled to open the 2023 season for the Rockies, but he has some upside. In 2020, Lamet compiled a 2.09 ERA for the Padres across 12 starts. In 2021 his role fluctuated between the rotation and bullpen and compiled a 4.40 ERA. In 2022, Lamet fully pitched out of the bullpen and compiled a 6.12 ERA in 32 appearances.

It's unclear what role he could play for Boston but he was starting with Worcester and compiled a 3.72 ERA across five appearances, including four starts. If Boston does officially call Lamet up, hopefully, his minor league success can carry over to the big league club.
