Marcus Stroman: 'No amount of money' could get him to play for Tony La Russa

The White Sox have generated no shortage of controversy for hiring 76-year-old Tony La Russa, and the decision has robbed them of the chance of going after at least one free agent, as pitcher Marcus Stroman said "no amount of money" could get him to play for La Russa.

The Athletic's Keith Law tweeted about the White Sox hiring La Russa knowing that he got his second DUI charge earlier this year and Stroman responded saying the decision was "baffling on all measures." Someone then asked Stroman if there were any circumstances that would convince him to sign with the White Sox and the 29-year-old made it clear there was no chance of that happening.

"No amount of money honestly," Stroman tweeted. "Peace of mind is always a priority."

Stroman is expected to be a desirable pitcher on the free-agent market, as he has proven to be a solid journeyman over the course of his career. While he missed the 2020 season due to a left calf tear, he pitched well in 2019, posting a 3.22 ERA and a 1.31 WHIP over 184 1/3 innings between the Blue Jays and Mets.

It's not immediately clear what exactly Stroman finds so objectionable about La Russa. Though, honestly, there's no shortage of complaints he might have. Along with being far too comfortable with drinking and driving, La Russa also faced criticism when he questioned Kaepernick protesting police brutality by kneeling during the national anthem, calling it "disrespectful" and implying it was insincere.
