Mets' Tomas Nido Headed to IL With Dry Eye Syndrome

The Mets' catching depth has taken a hit.

According to the Mets, Tomas Nido is headed to the injured list with dry eye syndrome.

The Mets have recalled catcher Michael Perez to replace him, and shifted pitcher Elieser Hernandez to the 60-day IL to make room on the 40-man roster.

With the rise of top prospect Francisco Alvarez, Nido's playing time has been diminished in recent weeks.

Alvarez is now swinging a hot bat at the plate (two home runs on Tuesday night), while Nido was batting .118.

But Nido's value is behind the plate, where he is an excellent defensive catcher. He handles the pitching staff well and brings a veteran presence to the catching room.

In addition to Nido, Omar Narvaez is also on the IL with a strained calf muscle. The Mets will now be without their two veteran catchers for the foreseeable future, which means even more playing time for Alvarez.
