Padres Reliever Day-to-Day With Back Injury
USA TODAY Sports

San Diego Padres' first-year relief pitcher Yuki Matsui is listed as day-to-day dealing with back spasms.

Manager Mike Shildt told reporters, including The Athletic's Dennis Lin.

The 38-year-old reliever felt his back tighten up on Saturday and could miss some time now.

San Diego signed the Japanese relief pitcher to a five-year deal worth $28 million in late December 2023.

For the last ten years, he's spent his time playing for the Tohoku Rakuten Golden Eagles in his home country. In his final season, he posted 39 saves, a 2-3 record, a 1.57 ERA, 72 strikeouts and a 0.89 WHIP in 59 appearances and 57.1 innings.

Matsui is set to play a significant role for the Friars. We'll see if the Padres strut out Matsui again this spring.
