Rangers land All-Star infielder Marcus Semien with seven-year, $175M deal

One of the top free agents of the MLB offseason is reportedly off the market, as the Texas Rangers have a seven-year deal worth "about $175 million" in place with second baseman Marcus Semien, according to Jon Heyman of MLB Network.

Semien, 31, had a huge season with the Toronto Blue Jays in 2021, finishing the year with 45 home runs, 102 runs batted in and an MLB-leading 86 extra base hits. He earned a Silver Slugger Award, Gold Glove Award and the first All-Star nod of his career. He also finished third in American League MVP voting for the second time in his career.

Before joining the Blue Jays on a one-year deal, Semien spent six seasons with the Oakland Athletics, with whom he primarily played shortstop.

The Rangers finished the 2021 season in last place in the AL West for the third time in four years. Only two teams scored fewer runs than Texas. The Rangers had Isiah Kiner-Falefa at shortstop in 2021 and Nick Solak at second.

According to Heyman, the New York Yankees were also interested in signing Semien but balked at the idea of a seven-year offer. Even after signing Semien, the Rangers might still be interested in free agent shortstop Trevor Story, says ESPN's Jeff Passan.
