Red Sox Hurler Elects Free Agency After Short Stint In Boston

The Boston Red Sox lost a piece of organizational depth to start the week but won't be too beat up about it after a short, failed experiment.

Boston took a worthy shot on a former Cy Young candidate whose production has fallen off a cliff despite seemingly still being in his prime. Unfortunately, the right-hander lasted less than two months in the organization.

Dinelson Lamet has elected free agency five days after he was designated for assignment by Boston according to the Major League Baseball transaction wire. The Red Sox offered him a spot at Triple-A Worcester but the right-hander chose to instead bet on himself in free agency despite his horrendous play in recent years.

Lamet only made one appearance for the Red Sox, allowing three runs on four hits and a walk, with one strikeout. 

His poor outing further inflated his brutal season. The 31-year-old is 1-4 with an 11.71 ERA, 32-to-23 strikeout-to-walk ratio, .353 batting average against and 2.35 WHIP in 27 2/3 innings between his one-game stint in Boston and 16 appearances with the Colorado Rockies. 

It'll be interesting to see where Lamet ends up, a former top prospect who had been a serviceable starter for a few years and had one elite, albeit shortened season before totally imploding.
