Report: Two-time All-Star SP Julio Teheran signs with Mexican League team

Two-time All-Star starting pitcher Julio Teheran is returning to the mound. He reportedly signed a deal with Toros de Tijuana of the Mexican League. Tijuana is the defending Mexican League champions.

Teheran spent the bulk of his MLB career with the Atlanta Braves, signing with the club as an amateur free agent in July 2007 at just 16 years old. Teheran made his big league debut in May 2011 and played in seven games — making four starts — in his first two seasons.

The native of Cartagena, Colombia broke through in 2013, posting what is still tied for his career high in wins (14), while recording a 3.20 ERA and 1.17 WHIP across 185 2/3 innings in 30 games (all starts). Teheran's best season was arguably 2014, when he made his first All-Star team and went 14-13 with a career-best 2.89 ERA and career-high 186 strikeouts, while registering a 1.08 WHIP and four complete games (including two shutouts).

He made his second All-Star squad in 2016 and finished the year 7-10 with a 3.21 ERA and career-best 1.05 WHIP. Frequently prone to wild spells, Teheran led the National League in hit batsmen in 2019 during his final season in Atlanta.

Teheran signed with the Los Angeles Angels in December 2019 but went 0-4 with a 10.05 ERA in 10 games (nine starts) during the 2020 pandemic-shortened campaign. The 31-year-old signed with the Detroit Tigers in February 2021 but made only one start with the club before getting injured and missing the rest of the year.

According to Baseball America, other former major leaguers on the Tijuana roster include Fernando Rodney, Oliver Perez and Sam Dyson.
