Royals' Whit Merrifield diagnosed with bone bruise, ligament swelling in right toe

Kansas City Royals two-time All-Star Whit Merrifield hasn't missed a game since the 2018 season. He's only missed 21 games since his first full big-league season in 2017, but will now be put on the shelf for at least a couple of weeks.

Merrifield exited Kansas City's game on Sunday against the Cleveland Guardians early with toe discomfort before undergoing an MRI. The infielder/outfielder has been involved in rampant trade rumors after agreeing to a restructured contract with the Royals before the season, exercising a team option for 2023 while adding a mutual option for 2024.

Known for his position versatility and speed, Merrifield has made 50 starts at second base this year and 33 starts in right field. Through 338 at-bats in 2022, the 33-year-old has slashed .240/.292/.343 with five home runs and 36 RBI while collecting 14 stolen bases.

Kansas City enters play Monday in last place in the AL Central with a 32-52 record.
