Royals Writer Shares 2023 Zack Greinke Update
David Richard-USA TODAY Sports

39-year-old right-hander Zack Greinke made his return to the Kansas City Royals in 2022 after 12 seasons away from the team.

Greinke spent parts of two seasons with the Milwaukee Brewers before a brief stay with the Los Angeles Angels.

He spent three years with the Los Angeles Dodgers before signing a deal with the Arizona Diamondbacks.

After parts of three seasons with the Houston Astros, Greinke returned to Kansas City and seemed to return to form, posting a 3.68 in 26 starts this year.

Greinke is set to become a free agent following the conclusion of the World Series, but according to Anne Rogers of MLB.com, the Royals are interested in bringing him back in 2023.

Royals, Greinke Interested In Return

Pitching was the Royals’ biggest weakness in 2022.

Royals pitchers combined for a 4.70 ERA, which was the worst in the American League.

But having a veteran arm like Greinke, who has still proven that he has something left in the tank, would be most beneficial for the Royals.

They could at the very least have a veteran to carry the torch and pass on knowledge to Kansas City’s young pitchers.

A one-two punch of Greinke and Brady Singer isn’t a bad combination either.

Greinke is well traveled and has been one of the best pitchers in Royals history.

Having him around for at least one more year certainly can’t hurt the Royals, who are already quite thin on pitching outside of him and Singer.

It appears that there is mutual interest between Greinke and the Royals to work out a new contract for the 2023 season.
