Colby Covington the latest to call for fight with Conor McGregor

Although Colby Covington and Conor McGregor have already penciled in opponents for their next bouts, a match-up between the two top-ranked fighters would certainly draw plenty of pay-per-view buys.

Ever the opportunist, Covington recently disclosed that he has his eye on a fight with McGregor — a fighter he has long admired — at some point down the road.

“I love what Conor’s done,” Covington said on the MCSC Media podcast. “I hope to be able to cross paths with him and fight him someday after I win this world title against Leon ‘Edward Scissorhands Scott’ from the U.K. That could be my next fight in line."

"I have nothing but respect and admiration for Conor and what he’s done in this sport. He’s made it possible for every fighter. It’s trickled down, what he’s done in the sport – the money and everything.”

McGregor typically fights in either the lightweight or featherweight divisions, but his next fight against Michael Chandler later this year will reportedly be at 170 pounds, marking his fourth bout at welterweight. He has won two of his previous three fights in the division.

Covington’s next fight will reportedly be against welterweight champion Leon Edwards later this year. Should Covington, who’s 0-2 in championship bouts, beat Edwards, it could set up a potential welterweight title fight against McGregor — something he’s stated is on his checklist should he beat Chandler.

The 35-year-old Covington last fought in March 2022, earning a unanimous decision over Jorge Masvidal. McGregor, 34, hasn’t fought in nearly two years after breaking his leg in his last fight against Dustin Poirier in July 2021.

Before McGregor returns to the octagon, he must undergo six months of drug testing under the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency. He has yet to rejoin the USADA testing pool.
