Jared Cannonier Systematically Shoots Down Title Shot Arguments For Israel Adesanya, Dricus Du Plessis, Winner Of Chimaev vs. Costa

Jared Cannonier took aim at most of the UFC’s other top middleweight contenders while explaining why he deserves the next shot at the division's title.

“Killa Gorilla” already came up short in his first attempt to become middleweight champion when he challenged Israel Adesanya at UFC 276 and lost a unanimous decision. The 39-year-old has rebounded from that result with back-to-back wins, and after Adesanya was upset by Sean Strickland at UFC 293 the division’s title picture appears to be significantly more wide-open than at any point in the last several years.

Speaking to The Schmo, Cannonier recently claimed that he has a far stronger case to be Strickland’s first challenger than any of the other middleweights currently vying for a title shot.

“I personally feel that I have a bigger claim to the next title shot than anybody else who everybody else is naming,” Cannonier said. “Everybody else is naming the rematch for Izzy, everybody else is naming Dricus Du Plessis. Everybody else is naming the winner of Costa vs. Chimaev. But I have a bigger case, I feel like I have a bigger stake at the claim for the title. I’m in a better position than all those guys, I’m higher-ranked than all of them."

Jared Cannonier Explains Why Other Middleweights Don't Deserve A Title Shot

Both Adesanya and Du Plessis are actually ranked higher than Cannonier currently, but “Killa Gorilla” did go on to outline exactly why the division’s other top contenders shouldn’t be in the conversation to take on Strickland next.

“From what I hear, [Du Plessis] missed his opportunity when he was injured to have his title shot. As we all know, if you’re injured and your opportunity comes along the UFC rolls right over you if you can’t roll with…Israel’s performance I feel doesn’t merit another rematch. He’s just coming off another rematch, so those two facts alone I feel weigh on his argument for a rematch. And Costa and Chimaev, they haven’t fought in the middleweight division in a long-a** time. So they shouldn’t even be relevant names as far as the title goes.”

Du Plessis did appear to be the frontrunner to challenge Adesanya at UFC 293 before the South African indicated he wouldn’t be ready to fight on that date, and as dominant as “The Last Stylebender” was during his first reign as middleweight champion his uninspired performance against Strickland has raised some doubts about giving him an immediate rematch.

Paulo Costa is currently #6 in the UFC’s middleweight rankings but hasn’t competed since he won a unanimous decision over Luke Rockhold at UFC 278. The Brazilian will welcome Khamzat Chimaev to the middleweight division at UFC 294 next month, and although “Borz” has yet to fight as a middleweight in the UFC his previous dominance may encourage the promotion to slot him into a title fight if he extends his unbeaten record.
