Longtime UFC veteran Sam Alvey has signed a deal with Karate Combat and is set to make his debut for the promotion next month.

The 37-year-old did successfully return to mixed martial arts in May for his first fight since leaving the UFC. Now, Karate Combat recently announced that Alvey has joined the promotion for a September 16 debut in the Dominican Republic.

Alvey An Unexpected Signing For Karate Combat

Alvey did have a three-fight run of knockout wins shortly after he first joined the UFC, and the 37-year-old will have to rediscover some of that form in Karate Combat if he wants to extend his combat sports career.

“Smile'n” dropped his UFC debut in 2014 but remained a staple of the promotion’s middleweight division over the next few years. Notable victories during that period included over the likes of Nate Marquardt and former light heavyweight champion Rashad Evans.

However, 2018 stoppage loss to Antônio Rogério Nogueira kicked off what eventually became a record nine-fight winless stretch.

Alvey’s first-round knockout loss to Michał Oleksiejczuk last year finally ended his time with the UFC, but he did successfully return to MMA this year at B2 Fighting Series 183, when he submitted Cameron Graham in a heavyweight bout.

Karate Combat has garnered support from major names such as Georges St-Pierre and Stephen “Wonderboy” Thompson but hasn’t managed to get many notable MMA fighters to actually compete within the promotion. So, perhaps adding Alvey to the roster will encourage a few new fans to tune in for the event on September 16.
