Watch: UFC's Amanda Nunes, Julianna Peña trade verbal blows

In an interview with Aaron Bronsteter of TSN Sports, Nunes and Peña, who already fought twice, discussed their upcoming trilogy bout that led to a verbal sparring between the two stars. 

Peña, who submitted Nunes in their first meeting in December 2021, believes she will recapture the bantamweight throne and become the final opponent in Nunes’ illustrious career. 

“It’s going to come to an end on June 10 when I regain my belt back and when we show the world who the best in the world truly, truly is,” Peña said. “And you may want to think about laying those gloves down inside the octagon after this fight.”

“The Ultimate Fighter 18” winner has victories over Nunes, Sara McMann, Cat Zingano and Jessica Eye, to name a select few. 

Peña, who is known for her elite grappling and relentless pressure, will have to defeat Nunes for a second time, which no fighter has done. 

The 34-year-old Nunes holds the record for most title fight wins (seven) and finishes (eight) in UFC women’s bantamweight division history. 

The Pojuca, Brazil native has defeated elite competition, including Cris Cyborg, Holly Holm, Valentina Shevchenko, Ronda Rousey and Miesha Tate, to name a select few. 

When asked about a potential retirement from MMA, Nunes (22-5) quickly shot down the idea of hanging up her gloves after UFC 289. 

Nunes, who is arguably the best women’s champion in MMA history, defeated Peña to regain the bantamweight title with a dominant decision victory in July 2022 and is confident that she will come out victorious again. 

“I’m far ahead of all those girls in this division and Julianna [Peña] as well,” Nunes said. “My wrestling got a lot better…if you rush, I’m going to put your a** down.” 

There’s no denying that the war of words between Nunes and Peña has added to the hype surrounding their highly anticipated trilogy bout on June 10 in Vancouver, Canada.
