Banchero Propels Magic to 111-96 Victory Over Raptors
Jeremy Reper-USA TODAY Sports

The Orlando Magic claimed a convincing 111-96 victory over the Toronto Raptors during Sunday’s NBA action, exacerbating the Raptors’ seven-game losing streak. Paolo Banchero led the charge with 29 points, highlighting a strong performance from the Magic that marks their eighth win in the last ten games.

“Every game is not going to be high-flying,” Magic coach Jamahl Mosley commented. “Our guys are finding ways to win and that’s important in this league. Even when the games aren’t pretty, you find ways to win.”

The Magic’s success was a team effort, with Franz Wagner contributing 22 points, nine rebounds, and five assists. Moritz Wagner also significantly impacted off the bench, scoring 14 points in the first game of an eight-game homestand. This victory underscores Orlando’s resilience and ability to find ways to win under varying circumstances.

The Raptors’ struggle was evident, with Jordan Nwora leading their scoring with 18 points in the face of numerous injuries within the team. Despite a spirited effort, including Nwora’s 12 consecutive points in the third quarter, the Raptors could not overcome their challenges.

“At the start of the third quarter they went on a run,” Raptors coach Darko Rajakovic explained. “We missed some layups and turned the ball over. They were able to get out and score in transition.”

Toronto’s performance was hindered by a lack of efficiency from the three-point line and turnovers, which prevented them from maintaining their usual fast-paced game. The Raptors’ 16 fast-break points were a far cry from their 37 in their previous matchup against the Magic.

Caleb Houstan’s three-pointer at the halftime buzzer was pivotal, giving Orlando a lead they would not relinquish. The Magic’s defense stood out, particularly in the early minutes of the second half, when Toronto struggled to score.

“I think defensively we’re really good,” Franz Wagner observed. “We have a lot of guys that take a lot of pride in that side of the floor, and we have really smart players, too. That’s always a good combination.”

Despite the loss, Nwora’s performance was a bright spot for the Raptors, as he seized the opportunity to showcase his talent and contribute significantly to the team’s efforts.

“Opportunities are something you have to seize when the moments come,” he stated. “Obviously it would be a lot better if they came in some wins, but that’s part of the NBA that you have to learn.”

Looking ahead, the Raptors aim to break their losing streak when they host the Sacramento Kings, while the Orlando Magic will look to continue their impressive form against the Charlotte Hornets.
