The Timberwolves' sale to Marc Lore and Alex Rodriguez is nearing finality and that could mean the return of the team's most legendary player.

A longstanding, bitter dispute between Kevin Garnett and owner Glen Taylor has seen the Hall of Famer remain distant from the club over the last several years. But ESPN's Brian Windhorst reported Monday that could be nearing an end.

"Assuming the transaction is finalized, there is a chance Garnett will take a role with the organization, sources told ESPN," Windhorst wrote Monday in a column about Karl-Anthony Towns.

Garnett is the greatest player in the Timberwolves history, having won the league MVP award in the 2003-04 season.

Drafted fifth overall by Minnesota in the 1995 draft, Garnett would go on to have a legendary career in Minnesota, guiding the organization to its most successful era.

In his first 12 seasons in Minnesota, Garnett was selected to 10 All-Star Games, winning All-Star game MVP in 2003, and led Minnesota to numerous playoff berths. Garnett averaged 24.2 points, 13.9 rebounds and 2.2 blocks per game for the Wolves during the 2003-04 season as the Wolves finished with the best record in the West. The Los Angeles Lakers ended up beating the Timberwolves 4-2 in the Western Conference finals that season.

After 12 seasons in Minnesota, Garnett was traded to the Boston Celtics ahead of the 2007-08 season. Garnett won his only NBA championship in his first season in Boston.

Seven-and-a-half seasons later, Garnett returned to play for Minnesota for a season and a half before retiring at the age of 39.

Garnett has been overwhelmingly positive about the current Wolves, touting Anthony Edwards as an MVP candidate and saying the Wolves "are a force" that currently sit second place in the Western Conference with a 32-14 record.
