Dahntay Jones On Why The 'Lob City' Clippers Failed
Wendell Cruz-USA TODAY Sports

Dahntay Jones, reflecting on the failure of the "Lob City" Clippers during an appearance on the 'Podcast P With Paul George' show, attributed the team's shortcomings to immaturity and conflicting personalities. Jones, who joined the team late, highlighted the evident rifts among the players from the outset, hindering their ability to connect and play cohesively.

"Immaturity. And I think that, and the people from that team, we spoke about it before, but I was kind of like the outsider. So I got on that team late. From the door, it's just was, you can see the conflict and personalities.

"Um, we had all the talent. The only other team that I thought was on our level was like the Cavs that year, when you had K-Love and Bron and Kyrie."

"They were forming that. CP, Blake, they were all playing well, but you could just see the rift in personalities. DeAndre and Blake, we called them the twins. They were on one side. CP was on the other side, and it just didn't mix. "

Despite possessing immense talent, Jones believed that the Clippers were unable to reach their full potential due to the inability of key players to mesh. He noted the divide between DeAndre Jordan and Blake Griffin on one side and Chris Paul on the other, illustrating a lack of unity that prevented the team from capitalizing on their collective skills.

During their time together, the "Lob City" Clippers achieved notable success, including a 3-1 lead over the Houston Rockets in the 2015 NBA playoffs. However, they ultimately faltered, losing the series in a stunning turn of events. Jones attributed this collapse to the team's inability to handle adversity and maintain cohesion under pressure.

Despite individual moments of brilliance on the court, Jones observed that off-court tensions persisted, undermining the team's chemistry and cohesion. He described how even during memorable plays, arguments and conflicts among players would arise, highlighting the underlying discord that plagued the team.

Ultimately, Jones emphasized the importance of team connectivity and the ability to overcome personal differences for collective success. He suggested that the Clippers' failure stemmed from the inability of key personalities to align their visions and work together effectively.

The "Lob City" Clippers era, characterized by high-flying dunks and highlight-reel plays, ultimately ended with disappointing playoff results. Despite their immense talent, the team's inability to overcome internal conflicts and achieve unity ultimately prevented them from reaching their full potential in the NBA playoffs.

The Lob City Clippers Could Have Been A Dynasty

The Lob City Clippers era was marked by electrifying plays, high-flying dunks, and a roster brimming with talent. Led by stars like Chris Paul, Blake Griffin, and DeAndre Jordan, the Clippers possessed the potential to become a dynasty in the NBA. However, despite their regular-season success and individual accolades, they fell short of reaching their ultimate goal of winning an NBA championship.

From the 2011-2012 season to the 2016-2017 season, the Lob City Clippers compiled an impressive regular-season record. However, their playoff performances varied, ultimately preventing them from establishing themselves as a dominant force in the postseason.

During the 2011-2012 season, the Clippers finished with a regular-season record of 40 wins and 26 losses, securing the fourth seed in the Western Conference playoffs. In the postseason, they advanced to the Conference Semifinals but were eliminated by the San Antonio Spurs in four games.

The following season, in 2012-2013, the Clippers improved their regular-season record to 56 wins and 26 losses, earning the fourth seed in the Western Conference once again. They advanced to the Conference Semifinals for the second consecutive year but were defeated by the Memphis Grizzlies in six games.

In the 2013-2014 season, the Lob City Clippers continued to excel in the regular season, finishing with a record of 57 wins and 25 losses, securing the third seed in the Western Conference playoffs. However, their playoff journey ended in disappointment as they were eliminated in the Conference Semifinals by the Oklahoma City Thunder in six games.

In the 2014-2015 season, the Clippers finished with a regular-season record of 56 wins and 26 losses, securing the third seed in the Western Conference playoffs once again. They advanced to the Conference Semifinals but were eliminated by the Houston Rockets in seven games after holding a 3-1 series lead.

During the 2015-2016 season, the Clippers compiled a regular-season record of 53 wins and 29 losses, earning the fourth seed in the Western Conference playoffs. They were eliminated in the First Round by the Portland Trail Blazers in six games.

In their final season together in 2016-2017, the Clippers finished with a regular-season record of 51 wins and 31 losses, securing the fourth seed in the Western Conference playoffs. They advanced to the First Round but were eliminated by the Utah Jazz in seven games, marking the end of the Lob City era without reaching the NBA Finals or even the Western Conference Finals.

Despite their regular-season success and postseason appearances, the Lob City Clippers failed to advance past the Conference Semifinals in subsequent seasons. Despite their immense talent and potential, internal conflicts and chemistry issues ultimately prevented them from achieving championship success, leaving their legacy as a team that fell short of fulfilling its dynasty aspirations.
