Draymond Green could leave Warriors after Bob Myers’ exit

May 30, 2023 could very well mark the end of an era for the Golden State Warriors. Bob Myers broke his silence on his NBA future and provided an update no one within the organization or a fan of the team wanted to hear. He has decided to step away from the franchise, saying it is time.

Myers’s contract with the Warriors expires in June and he will be leaving behind quite a legacy in the Bay Area. He oversaw one of the most impressive basketball dynasties ever, as he joined the franchise in 2011 after being one of the prominent player agents in the league.

In 12 seasons the Warriors managed to make the NBA Finals six times, winning four of them. He had a lasting impact on many people and players within the organization and without him being there, some major changes could be on the horizon.

One of those changes could be Draymond Green moving on. Green spoke effusively about Myers upon hearing the news when talking to Sportsnaut.

“He means the world to me,” Green told Sportsnaut. “Working with him has been a complete honor. He’s great. He knows the business and I learn from him. To say that doesn’t matter, it’s a lie. Of course, it matters. But there’s a bunch of things to take into account. Yes, that is one of the things that matters. All right? But ultimately, I can’t hinge my whole decision on that. But f— right it matters.”

The work Myers has done with the Warriors is extremely impressive. Golden State was far from a perennial playoff team, let alone a contender before he joined the franchise. Now they are one of the marquee organizations in the league led by Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson and Green.

While Myers is lauded for his basketball acumen, and rightfully so, his impact goes beyond the court. Green spoke very highly of him as a person, helping him through some tough times while playing and away from the game.

“He’s always seen the good in me and appreciated what I give to the table and coached me through some of the roughest moments in my life,” Green told Sportsnaut. “For that, I am forever thankful and am forever indebted to him. You don’t find genuine people who care outside of what you bring to your life. He is one of those people. No matter what, no matter of anything that is going on with me, if it puts him in a bind, that was never his priority. His priority was for me and for my well-being. And for that, I’m forever indebted.”

Green is the first major decision that the team will make without Myers in the mix. Next will be Klay Thompson after the Warriors were able to hammer out long-term deals with Jordan Poole and Andrew Wiggins this past offseason.

While rumors have swirled about his future, Green has made one thing clear. While the loss of Myers hurts and will have an impact on his decision, his feeling remains the same; he wants to be in Golden State for the entirety of his career.

“I want to be a Warrior for the rest of my life,” said the 33-year-old Green following his 11th NBA season. “I want to ride out with the same dudes I rode in with. We put the work in to make that happen.”

Whether that happens or not is anyone’s guess right now. That decision will be impacted by whoever takes the job and the interest Green can drum up on the open market. Despite some hiccups, in a lot of ways he is the heart and soul of the Warriors as a leader and tone-setter. Losing him after also losing Myers would be a lot for Golden State to overcome.
