Four-time All-Star leaves NBA to play in Europe

Kemba Walker's NBA career has come to an end. Once seen as an ironman for the Charlotte Hornets, a string of knee issues rapidly limited Walker's ability to be a potent threat on the basketball court. As such, Walker will be taking his talents to the south of France, where he will be suiting up for Monaco in the LNB Pro A.

Walker left the Charlotte Hornets as part of the double sign-and-trade that saw Boston send Terry Rozier in the opposite direction. Since moving to the Celtics, Walker's career has stuttered, in large part due to a knee issue that has shown no sign of improving. Stints with the New York Knicks and Dallas Mavericks also failed to ensure Walker remained in the NBA.

During a recent interview with The Athletic's Jared Weiss, Walker noted how he wanted to continue his playing career.

“I love basketball. I’m not ready to stop playing yet,” Walker said. “Wherever the wind takes me.”

By moving to the LNB Pro A, Walker will face a significantly shorter season. There are 18 teams in Walker's new league, each of which plays each other twice. Eight teams then progress to the playoffs, while the bottom two teams suffer relegation, which is common among European sports. As such, Walker will play significantly less, with a longer recovery time between games, allowing his body to heal and ensuring he's capable of playing at a high level.

During his prime, Walker was an elite scoring guard who averaged 19.8 points, 3.8 rebounds, and 5.5 assists per game, shooting 45.2% from the field and 35.7% from deep across eight seasons with the Hornets. Monaco won't be getting that version of Walker. However, the talent disparity between the LNB Pro A and the NBA is wide, which means the former All-Star guard will likely shine as one of the biggest stars in his division.

Walker had no interest from teams in the NBA, so making the move overseas is both logical and understandable. Walker wants to end his career on his terms, and there are not many better ways to do it than by playing in a world-renowned city with great food, and great sights while playing the game that you love. Walker has a chance to dominate in France, and given his reputation as an amazing teammate and person, he deserves the opportunity to be 'the man' again.
