JJ Redick makes bold claim about Warriors star Draymond Green

Draymond Green enters the 2023 offseason with a decision to make regarding his current contractual status. Currently, the Golden State Warriors forward has a player option for next season. However, Green is widely expected to decline that option as he looks for longer-term security heading into the twilight of his career.

When speaking on a June 14 episode of ESPN's "First Take," JJ Redick shared his opinion regarding Green's importance to the Warriors and how they couldn't contend for a championship without him.

"They're not winning without Draymond," Redick said. "And there's no way to replace Draymond if he does leave."

Unfortunately for Green, his stock has fallen this year after he endured a tumultuous 2022-23 NBA season. It all began with Green punching Jordan Poole during the Golden State Warriors' preseason training camp, leading Green to take some time away from the team. Upon his return, the 2022 champions found themselves struggling for consistency, as they lacked on-court cohesion.

It wasn't until after the trade deadline that we began to see the Warriors play anywhere close to the level we've come to expect from them. Yet, as Green noted following his team's elimination from the playoffs, their improvements came too late, and bad habits had already been formed.

"There was five months of the season where slippage has just been occurring, and by February, if that slippage has been going on that long, you are where you are at that point," Green told ESPN's Stephen A. Smith back in May. "You’ve built bad habits. That is who you are now."

With so much baggage, Green could decide to call time on his tenure with the Warriors and explore his options in unrestricted free agency. There will undoubtedly be multiple contending teams that would make space on their roster for a player of Green's caliber and IQ. As such, we should expect the Warriors to work with Green on a new contract that could potentially take him into retirement. Yet, should Golden State be unsuccessful in those negotiations, they would have no choice but to learn how to compete without Green in their rotation.

Unfortunately for the Warriors, there is a difference between competing and contending. Should Green choose to play out the final stretch of his career elsewhere, we could be looking at the end of the Warriors' dynasty. On the other hand, the chance to continue creating history with Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson could be too much of a draw for Green. It will likely all come down to how hard Golden State's front office fights to keep Green in the Bay Area, because nobody wants to stay where they're not valued or wanted.
