The Oklahoma City Thunder continue to prove that they are a force to reckon with in the 2023-24 NBA season. They’re young , but they’re ultra-talented and hungry for success. And one of the up-and-coming talents on the team is no other than rookie Cason Wallace, who starred for the Thunder in Sunday’s 124-93 demolition of the lowly Memphis Grizzlies at home.
Wallace is coming into his own, and he is only getting better. He has been proving to the Thunder that they have a gem in him, which head coach Mark Daigneault already thought of many months ago. It can be remembered that Daigneault compared Wallace to legendary NFL defensive back Ed Reed last year.
Mark Daigneault compared Cason Wallace to Ed Reed:

Well, Wallace heard of the comparison again and said that it makes sense since he also has a little bit of a football background himself.
Via Brandin Rahbar of the Daily Thunder:
Cason Wallace on hearing Mark Daigneault has compared him to Ed Reed, the Hall of Fame NFL safety:
“I did play football, I was pretty good. I do feel like that helps, the physicality and knowing how to play the ball.”
Cason says he did play safety but mostly played WR and QB.
Against the Grizzlies, the former Kentucky Wildcats star, who was selected in the 2023 NBA Draft by the Dallas Mavericks (10th overall) before getting traded to the Thunder, scored 22 points off the bench and added four assists, two rebounds, and a block in 27 minutes. He went 9/14 from the field and 4/6 from deep.
Anytime a player, even in non-football sports, gets compared to Reed, it is almost always a good thing. Reed is one of the greatest players to ever play in the NFL, having won a Super Bowl and a Defensive Player of the Year award.
Wallace is also showing great defensive capabilities with the Thunder. For what it’s worth, he is third on the team so far this season among players with at least 1,000 total minutes on the floor in terms of defensive box-pus minus (0.6) even though he isn’t a regular starter.
