The Philadelphia 76ers face a giant hurdle as they head back the Wells Fargo Center with a 0-2 deficit against the New York Knicks in the first round. Fans who watched the game will argue that the referees had a hand in how the game ended, and some Sixers players may agree.

As the team now prepares for a challenging Game 3 in the City of Brotherly Love, the league has come forward with clarifications as a review of the game’s final minutes revealed that the fans were right about their suspicions all along.

NBA revealed several missed calls were made during the Philadelphia 76ers’ Game 2 loss

Nick Nurse has made claims after the game that the referees didn’t give him the timeout he called in the dying minutes of the fourth quarter. If the timeout was given, Tyrese Maxey wouldn’t have been involved in a melee that ultimately decided the game for the Knicks.

The Spun’s Chris Rosvoglou reported what the league found to be missed calls the referees made late in te game:

For starters, the NBA said Knicks star Jalen Brunson should’ve been called for a foul when he tugged at Tyrese Maxey’s jersey. The star guard for the 76ers ended up turning over the ball just a few seconds later.

The league claims Knicks forward Josh Hart should’ve also been assessed a foul for how he guarded Maxey on that same possession.

As for Nurse’s attempt at calling a timeout, here’s what the report said: “An attempt to call a timeout by Coach Nurse (PHI) during this play is neither recognized nor granted by the officials.”

The NBA also said Knicks forward OG Anunoby should’ve been called for defensive three seconds. That’s probably the least egregious mistake of the bunch.

If any of these calls had been made, the Sixers might have eked out a narrow win at the Madison Square Garden and start Game 3 with less pressure. Maxey and Embiid played their hearts out for the Sixers, finishing with 35 and 34 points, respectively.

However, the Knicks were able to edge out the Sixers thanks to their team play. The entire NYK starting lineup finished with double-digit points, with Brunson and Josh Hart taking over most of the scoring burden.

The Philadelphia 76ers need to secure Games 3 and 4 if they want to advance to the second round, and the fans hope that the refs won’t kill off their momentum this time.
