Potential landing spots for Draymond Green

Draymond Green, a four-time NBA champion and integral part of the Warriors’ dynasty, has declined his $27.5 million contract option for the 2023-24 season, according to Shams Charania of The Athletic.

The move has makes him an unrestricted free agent, granting him the freedom to explore offers and opportunities from other NBA teams. Given his talents and championship resume, it’s likely that several teams will express interest in acquiring him.

Green, who’s spent his entire 11-year NBA career with the Warriors, averaged 8.5 points, 6.8 assists and 7.2 rebounds last season. At 33 years old, he still serves as a valuable asset to any team, providing a combination of defensive prowess and playmaking skills on the floor.

Here are three potential landing spots for the veteran forward.

Golden State Warriors

There is a possibility that Green could re-sign with the Warriors, as both parties have not ruled out that scenario. In April, Green expressed his desire to retire as a Warrior and even envisioned signing a final contract to play four more years in the league.

It wouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone if Green decides to stay in the Bay Area, considering his familiarity with head coach Steve Kerr’s system and history with long-time teammates Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson.

Los Angeles Lakers

Green’s friendship with Lebron James and their shared connection with Klutch Sports could be the determining factor in a potential jump to the Lakers. The Lakers have not been shy in providing James with the talent needed to make a long postseason run, with the goal of adding another NBA title to their trophy case.

Although their primary need is at point guard, the Lakers should consider adding Green to serve as a defensive anchor. The team ranked 12th in the NBA in defensive rating (113.2), indicating that there is need for improvement. Adding the four-time NBA All Defensive First Team member would be a significant boost for a team who struggled stopping the Nuggets in the Western Conference Finals.

Miami Heat

It’s tough to imagine that Green, who is a four-time NBA champ, would not want to join a championship contender, like the Heat, who have a win-now mentality. The Heat, who ranked No. 25 in the NBA in offensive rating (112.3) last season, need an offensive facilitator other than Jimmy Butler, and Green could play that role.

Despite being listed as a forward, Green has exceptional court vision and passing skills that are crucial in today’s NBA. His ability to find open teammates creates scoring opportunities.

With a high basketball IQ, Green is able to set effective screens, move the ball and contribute with rebounding. His versatility extends beyond statistics as he provides elite leadership and a vocal presence on the floor. Green’s mere presence on the Heat would significantly improve their offensive ranking across the league.
