Rockets Giving Former First-Round Pick Another Chance
Jerome Miron-USA TODAY Sports

Back in 2015, Willie Cauley-Stein was the number six draft pick by the Sacramento Kings.

Since then, he has bounced around the league and has a lot of trouble finding a team that will keep him long-term.

It sounds like he has a new home in the NBA but we don’t know what his exact future holds.

Cauley-Stein was officially signed by the Houston Rockets the other day with a non-guaranteed training camp deal.

Fans of the player shouldn’t necessarily expect to see him on the court much.

In fact, he might be headed straight to the G League.

Willie With The Rockets

When you look at the current Rockets roster you see that they already have a lot of depth at center with guys like Derrick Favors, Usman Garuba, Bruno Fernando and everyone’s favorite Boban Marjanovic ready to take on that role.

Cauley-Stein’s signing will likely send him to the Rocket’s G League team, the Rio Grande Valley Vipers.

Now, that doesn’t mean he won’t work his way back into the NBA.

He will definitely be one of the best players on that Valley Vipers and could impress and then earn his spot on the Rockets’ bench.

This wouldn’t be the first time that a player has taken a detour to the G League only to come back better than ever.

Cauley-Stein recently played for the Dallas Mavericks and Philadelphia 76ers but hardly got any minutes.

He hasn’t been a very strong player for a couple of years now so some time in the G League might be exactly what he needs to step up his game and get back in good form.
