Terry Rozier has 'preference' to play for Heat

Terry Rozier once again finds his name being floated in trade rumors. The veteran guard has been viewed as a potential trade chip for the Charlotte Hornets since they drafted LaMelo Ball in 2020. 

However, Rozier has continued to adapt his game and remains a core member of Charlotte's rotation. Yet, with new ownership in place, the Hornets are expected to be active in rebuilding their team around Ball and rookie Brandon Miller.

Jake Fischer of Yahoo Sports has reported that Rozier could be made available via trade. Fischer also noted that Rozier's preference would be to join the Miami Heat. 

"Terry Rozier’s strong play has made the combo guard a more viable trade candidate than ever at his $24 million average annual salary, with a known preference to join the Miami Heat, league sources told Yahoo Sports," Fischer wrote. 

Rozier, 29, would be a significant upgrade over Kyle Lowry for the Heat. He is firmly in his prime and has proven capable of being a secondary or tertiary star alongside other ball-dominant players. 

He also has the swagger to fit into "Heat Culture" and is known for being a fierce competitor. However, the Heat would likely need to move on from Lowry before absorbing Rozier's $24 million-a-year contract. 

Still, Rozier would add a new dimension to Miami's offense. This season, he's averaging 24 points, 3.8 rebounds and 6.8 assists, shooting 45.7% from the field and 36.9% from 3-point range. His length and hip dexterity would also make him a reliable point-of-attack defender in Erik Spoelstra's robust defensive system. 

The biggest roadblock for Rozier is that Miami has been saving its assets to acquire a third star player. As such, it's unlikely they would part with much to bring him to South Beach. 

Still, if Pat Riley is looking for an upgrade at the point guard position, Rozier could be the ideal fit. "Scary Terry" in Miami's playoff rotation would instantly make him a fan favorite. On paper, it's a smart deal. The question is whether it becomes a reality.
