Terry Rozier's injury has Miami's championship dreams hanging in the balance

Terry Rozier suffered a knee injury during Sunday's Boston Celtics win over the Miami Heat. The veteran guard landed awkwardly during the game and instantly clutched his knee. He was unable to shoot his free throws following the incident.

Miami is now awaiting the results of an MRI. Those results will significantly impact how the remainder of the Heat's season goes. When Pat Riley made the trade for Rozier, he sent Kyle Lowry in the opposite direction. Rozier is younger, more explosive, and has a track record of scoring in bunches. He was starting to build chemistry next to Tyler Herro.

Erik Spoelstra's team has struggled this season. Their summer-long pursuit of Damian Lillard stopped the front office from upgrading the playing staff. The focus was focused on landing a superstar talent to pair with Jimmy Butler and Bam Adebayo. That pursuit didn't pay off. Rozier's mid-season addition was supposed to help bridge that talent deficit.

If Rozier is ruled out for the remainder of the season, it's hard to envision Miami being a genuine contender in the postseason. There's simply too much talent in the Eastern Conference. Spoelstra's coaching can only take the team so far. Miami needs Rozier's scoring, playmaking and abrasive play style if they want to make an instant return to the NBA Finals.

Not having Lowry as a potential backup guard will also hurt Miami. Right now, they don't have a legitimate backup ball-handler. Losing Gabe Vincent to the Los Angeles Lakers during the summer continues to haunt the Heat.

Miami will undoubtedly be hoping Rozier's injury isn't too serious. They need him back in the rotation sooner rather than later. Not only because of his potential to help the franchise in the playoffs, but also because they need him to continue getting acclimated to Miami's system and his new teammates. Miami should have an update in the near future. Then, we will have a better idea of how the remainder of their season is going to play out.
