The Bengals officially signed Fred Johnson to a one-year contract for the 2022 season on Tuesday morning, but the 24-year-old won't be sticking around.
Cincinnati plans to release Johnson according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.
He was a restricted free agent and would've made over $2 million in 2022. They made the decision to sign him prior to the start of free agency last week. With the addition of La'el Collins, the Bengals have had a change of heart and will part ways with Johnson.
He was a healthy scratch for most of the 2021 season. He appeared in five games and made one start. He was on the field for 90 (29%) of the Bengals' offensive snaps.
Johnson is subject to waivers, which means another team could claim him and add him to their roster.
